Harold Dailey

Dailey, nicknamed “Rabbit,” joined the Fairfax County Police Department in 1951, retiring as a lieutenant in 1979. He served as a private, motorcycle policeman, and detective. At one time, McLean had a baseball team, and Harold was an outfielder. The police department also had a team, on which he played in the outfield and also pitched. Harold is seen here on the right in the top row. (Fairfax County Police Historical Association.)

Malcolm Tuthill

The Tuthill family owned and operated Texaco filling stations in Northern Virginia beginning in 1951. Around 1960, a Texaco station operated by Malcolm Tuthill occupied the triangle formed by Old Dominion Drive and Elm Street, where Storm’s Store and, later, a District Grocery Store, once stood. McLean had many filling stations and became known as “gasoline alley.” Malcolm is shown pumping gas at the McLean station. (Vicky Heckman.)
